My
current body of work is about the small components that come together
to make up a greater whole. These components are building blocks for a
larger structure. I chose the term structure because it implies many things
from man large made buildings to natural microorganisms. Each is constructed
to make up its form.
This series is comprised of a variety of abstracted objects as subject
matter. Within the work I combine color and line to express the skeletal
arrangement. Working initially from realistic imagery, I juxtapose marks
and layers of colored glazes until there is an accumulation that renders
an unrecognizable image. Shapes drift amongst veils creating a hierarchical
order, like the order of things in nature. This method of layering follows
the stratification of human/animal tissue, which is a constant theme in
my work. As in a framework of webs, the parts come together in a complex
array. I am paying homage to the elegance of cellular patterns in nature.
Depth appears in the painting as I intuit a fictional architecture. Building
up and up until there is a peak. In titling the work, I refer to emotional
states and urgings. Gut reactions I have to the work as it progresses,
not from its original state but rather sometime in its development. Through
a synthesis of gestural lines and strokes, the piece attains a rhythm,
a type of movement.
Our human nature instinctually is driven to create. We build enormous
skyscrapers, microscopic machines and of course life itself. We continue
to grow and develop; from simple to complex we have evolved over time.
